Your SefaSilver piece is made to last — but like any fine jewelry, a little care goes a long way in keeping it looking as good as the day it arrived. Here's how to take care of it.
Keep It Dry
Moisture is silver's biggest enemy. Remove your jewelry before showering, swimming, washing dishes, or exercising. Chlorine, salt water, and sweat can all speed up tarnishing and dull the finish over time.
Avoid Chemical Contact
Perfume, lotion, hairspray, and cleaning products contain chemicals that can react with silver and cause discoloration. As a rule of thumb: put your jewelry on last, after makeup and skincare, and take it off first when you get home.
Store It Properly
Tarnish is caused by exposure to air and humidity, so how you store your jewelry matters as much as how you wear it.
- Store pieces in the pouch or box they arrived in, ideally airtight
- Keep jewelry separated — pieces rubbing against each other can cause scratches
- Add an anti-tarnish strip or a small silica gel packet to your storage box if you live in a humid climate
- Avoid storing jewelry in the bathroom, where humidity is highest
Cleaning Your Jewelry
- For light tarnish, gently buff with a soft, lint-free polishing cloth (a microfiber cloth works too)
- For a deeper clean, wash with mild soap and lukewarm water, then dry thoroughly with a soft cloth before storing
- Avoid abrasive materials, paper towels, or household cleaning chemicals — they can scratch the surface or strip the finish
- Never use silver dip cleaners or ultrasonic cleaners unless a piece has gemstones rated safe for them — when in doubt, stick to the cloth-and-soap method
Handle With Care
Remove rings and bracelets before manual tasks like gardening, cleaning, or working out — sterling silver is durable but can still bend, scratch, or take impact damage under enough force.
Why Tarnishing Happens
Tarnish is a natural chemical reaction between silver and sulfur compounds in the air — it's not a sign of poor quality, and it's normal even with genuine sterling silver. The good news: it's reversible with proper cleaning, and following the steps above will significantly slow it down.
